ROHS Compliance

Taiwan has taken a significant step in strengthening its environmental protection framework by adding PFOS and PFOA to its groundwater discharge prohibition list. These substances belong to the broader group of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), often referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment and resistance to degradation.

By including PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonate) and PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid) in the prohibition list, Taiwan aims to prevent their release into groundwater systems, which are critical sources of drinking water and ecosystem sustainability. This move reflects growing global concerns over the toxicological impacts, bioaccumulation, and long-term environmental risks associated with PFAS substances.

The regulation is expected to have direct implications for industries such as:

  • Chemicals and petrochemicals

  • Electronics and semiconductors

  • Textiles and coatings

  • Firefighting foam manufacturers

Companies operating in or exporting to Taiwan will need to:

  • Review and monitor PFAS usage in their processes

  • Strengthen wastewater treatment and discharge controls

  • Ensure compliance with updated environmental standards

  • Explore safer alternatives to PFOS and PFOA

This development aligns Taiwan with global regulatory trends, including actions taken by the EU and the US to restrict PFAS usage and protect water resources. It also reinforces the increasing importance of proactive chemical management and ESG-driven compliance strategies.
