SBTi, a leading organization focused on aligning corporate sustainability efforts with global climate goals, has unveiled its new five-year strategy for 2026–2030. The strategy marks a major shift in the organization’s approach — expanding beyond climate target setting and validation to actively supporting companies in implementing their climate commitments.

Key priorities of the new strategy include introducing more tailored target-setting approaches based on what companies can realistically influence, strengthening support for climate action implementation, reducing fragmentation across climate standards, and expanding engagement in high-emitting sectors and regions.

Founded in 2015, the SBTi has played a central role in making science-based environmental targets a standard business practice. Its core activities include developing best practices for emissions reduction and net-zero targets aligned with climate science, offering technical guidance to companies, and independently validating corporate climate targets. In 2021, the organization launched its flagship Corporate Net-Zero Standard and is currently developing an updated version, Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.

According to the SBTi, the new strategy was shaped by feedback from companies seeking more practical guidance, clearer implementation pathways, and improved data support to turn climate ambition into measurable action.

The strategy highlights four major focus areas: developing action-oriented standards, strengthening implementation support, improving alignment across sustainability frameworks, and broadening coverage across industries and geographies.

As part of its standards development, the SBTi plans to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach and introduce more sector-specific and region-specific frameworks tailored to different business contexts.

To strengthen implementation, the organization will place greater emphasis on data transparency and system-level progress assessments, helping companies benchmark performance against peers and identify priority areas for action.

The strategy also prioritizes collaboration with other organizations and standard-setting bodies to minimize duplication, reduce complexity, and streamline reporting requirements for businesses.

Additionally, the SBTi aims to expand its global presence and increase its impact by growing its network across high-emission sectors and emerging regions.
