U.K. greenhouse gas emissions fell 2% in 2025 to 367 MtCO₂e, driven by lower coal use and reduced industrial activity, while transport emissions rose, according to provisional data. Emissions are now 54% below 1990 levels, with carbon dioxide making up 78% of the total.

Industrial emissions dropped 12% due to reduced output and blast furnace closures, while power sector emissions fell slightly as coal use reached zero following the 2024 phase-out. Renewables supplied a record 52% of electricity, with low-carbon sources reaching 65%.

Transport remained the largest emitter at 31%, with emissions rising 2% due to higher road fuel use. Buildings emissions fell 2% due to lower heating demand, while agriculture (13%), industry (11%), and electricity supply (10%) followed.

Fuel supply emissions declined 5%, and coal contributed just 1% of total emissions. Petroleum emissions rose 2%, while gas emissions fell 4%.

The long-term decline continues, with emissions down 54% since 1990, driven by a shift to renewables and lower energy use. However, rising transport emissions highlight ongoing challenges.
