Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)

The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive is an EU regulation, initially 2002/95/EC and later updated to 2011/65/EU, that restricts the use of six specific hazardous materials in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). It came into effect on July 1, 2006, requiring all applicable products in the EU market to be compliant. The directive has also been transposed into UK law.

RoHS specifies maximum levels for the following six restricted materials

  • Lead (Pb): 1000 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg): 100 ppm
  • Cadmium (Cd): 100 ppm
  • Hexavalent Chromium:(Cr VI) 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): 1000 ppm
