The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has announced the pricing of HK$10 billion (USD 1.3 billion) in digital green bonds — the world’s largest-ever digital bond issuance.

Digital, or tokenized, green bonds are blockchain-based instruments that enable trading, interest, and principal payments directly on a blockchain platform, offering enhanced transparency, traceability, and faster settlement. The issuance attracted strong investor demand, with subscriptions exceeding HK$130 billion (USD 16.7 billion), and included four tranches denominated in HKD, RMB, USD, and EUR.

This marks HKSAR’s third digital green bond issuance, following earlier offerings of HK$800 million in 2023 and HK$6 billion in 2024. The latest issuance introduced new innovations such as the use of tokenized central bank money for settlements in HKD and RMB tranches, and the application of Digital Token Identifiers across all tranches.
